In a new report today, Axios exposed that “more than half a dozen” of President Trump’s best and brightest White House aides are weighing an immediate exodus from the West Wing, in the wake of Michael Wolff’s devastating exposé, Fire and Fury, out today.
According to the report, “Many leaving are quite fearful about the next chapter of the Trump presidency.”
Their fear is well-placed.
Wolff’s exposé has utterly evaporated the last shred of credibility to which this president clung, rendering him an abject lame duck, despite Republicans controlling all three branches of government.
Moreover, the revelations in the book have enflamed the Trumpian madness the book’s top White House sources describe — and which Axios’ reporters confirm:
- ‘If a wackadoo moment occurred on the occasions … when his remarks careened in no clear direction, his staff had to go into intense method-acting response. It took absolute discipline not to acknowledge what everyone could see.’
- ‘At points on the day’s spectrum of adverse political developments, he could have moments of, almost everyone would admit, irrationality. When that happened, he was alone in his anger and not approachable by anyone.’
- ‘His senior staff largely dealt with these dark hours by agreeing with him, no matter what he said.’
His irrational rage has left many outside the White House terrorized by the idea of Trump actually acting on his nuclear Twitter battle with North Korean dictator Kim Jung-Un.
Meanwhile, staff within the White House know even better than the rest of us how real the threat is.
As if they did not have enough reasons to flea, Trump’s staff’s concern for the future of his presidency resides, as well, in Special Prosecutor Mueller’s Russia, money laundering, and obstruction investigation.
Mueller seems very close to proving that the now-president and his inner circle indeed conspired with Russia in the 2016 presidential election and have subsequently engaged in rampant obstruction of justice to fend off the consequences.
When the law comes for Trump, Ivanka, Jared, and others in the West Wing, peripheral aides will want to give them as wide a berth as possible.
The sooner the smart staffers exit stage left, the better for them.
As for the rest of us, we can only hope they shed the lack of patriotism that has fueled their silence within the White House.
They could redeem themselves by spilling the beans to Mueller the second they leave.
