Trump just gave April an official label that mocks his sexual assault victims

President Donald Trump — a man who has been credibly accused of sexual assault by numerous women, admitted to as much on tape, and allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl — has officially made his most hypocritical presidential pronouncement to date; no small feat for a man who pathologically lies every time he appears in front of cameras.

The Trump administration has declared that April 2018 will be “National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.” Daniel Dale of The Toronto Star shared the official statement from the White House.

Ironically, it calls for sexual criminals to be “held accountable” for their vile acts, but the signature at the bottom of the statement is that of a man who has repeatedly escaped accountability for his own sexual predation. It reads as a cruel farce.

Add your name to millions demanding Congress take action on the President’s crimes. IMPEACH TRUMP & PENCE!

While the idea of a National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month is a great one, it’s fatally undermined by the fact that Donald Trump is the man calling for it. Under current circumstances, it comes across not only as deeply disingenuous but downright sinister.

By pretending to be an advocate for sexual assault victims, Trump insulates himself further from criticism and responsibility for his own crimes. Now whenever someone brings up the fact that he has preyed on women for decades, he can deny it and point to the fact that he created this month as proof that he opposes sexual violence.

The only way Trump can make recompense for his monstrous mistreatment of women is to come clean, admit his guilt, seek the forgiveness of his victims, and accept whatever punishment is handed down. Of course, the odds of that ever happening are less than zero. Trump will continue to abuse his power to evade consequences for his evil behavior. The most we can do is call out his hypocrisy, advocate for his victims and the victims of others, and work to eject him from the White House.
