After analyzing the impact of the recent U.S.-led bombing campaign against Syrian chemical weapons facilities, Israeli intelligence has found that President Trump’s claim that it was a “Mission Accomplished” truly fits the definition of “fake news.”
Syria’s chemical weapons were not all destroyed. The Syrian Arab Air Force’s ability to deliver deadly weapons, be they steel or gas, is as strong as ever and the evil plans of Syrian President Bashar Assad have been barely inconvenienced. according to Israeli intelligence assessments reported by Israel’s YNet News.com.
“If President Trump had ordered the strike only to show that the US responded to Assad’s use of chemical weapons, then that goal has been achieved,” a senior Israeli defense official said.
“But if there was another objective—such as paralyzing the ability to launch chemical weapons or deterring Assad from using it again,” added the intelligence official, “it’s doubtful any of these objectives have been met.”
“The fact there were no reports of chemicals leaking following the strikes,” reported YNet News.com, “only serves to bolster assessments that the major stockpiles haven’t been hit.”
The Israelis were also laughing at Trump for how he handled the chemical weapon crisis.
For days before the retaliatory attack by the U.S., the U.K., and France, Trump publicly announced and even tweeted about his plans to bomb Syria in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack against the rebel-held enclave of Douma in the Eastern Ghouta suburb of Damascus.
The Israelis say that the president’s very public posturing gave Assad plenty of time to move his chemical weapon stockpiles to other new secret locations, scatter aircraft, secure munitions, move out troops and remove key scientific talent and materials from places likely to be hit.
“If you want to shoot—shoot, don’t talk,” said an Israeli diplomatic source. “In the American case, this is mostly talk. They themselves show actions are not going to follow.”
That last line is a reference to Trump’s declaration days ago that the U.S. would soon pull all of its troops out of Syria which went against the advice of most U.S. military experts.
“Assad still has his jets and helicopters,” reported Business Insider yesterday. “The air wing in Assad’s army that the U.S. suspects of having carried out a chemical attack earlier this month on the town of Douma went unpunished.”
Even worse, the Israelis correctly believe the U.S. is only pretending to try and be effective.
“Israeli officials believe the United States has been intentionally underplaying its ability to operate against Syria, so it doesn’t have to do so,” reported YNet News.com.
“On several occasions,” continued the report, “Israeli officials have pointed to their American counterparts that the United States has the ability to do more for the Syrian people and were met with shrugs and bizarre assertions that this was not possible operationally.”
As another intelligence official concluded: “The statement of ‘Mission Accomplished’ and (the assertion) that Assad’s ability to use chemical weapons has been fatally hit has no basis.”
Trump continues to show he is inept as the American Commander-in-Chief and makes things worse with his false bravado, impulsive decisions, frequent reversals of his plans and mixed signals to friends, foes and even his own military.
It is Russia and Syria who come out of this episode looking smart, smug and untouched, while Trump has led America and out key allies down a path where not only is the mission not accomplished, but is a failure in every possible sense of the world.
