Yesterday, the state of Texas was once again rocked by a horrifying massacre. Nine high schoolers and their teacher were ruthlessly gunned down in this year’s 101st mass shooting, leaving a community devastated.
Nine families that were preparing to send their children to college now find themselves making preparations for funerals. Having to bury a child is likely one of the hardest things in the world to do, and having to deal with the expense of a funeral while struggling with the agonizing grief must be beyond overwhelming.

Thankfully, someone is stepping in to lighten the burden. Superstar defensive end of the Houston Texans J.J Watt was shattered by the news of the shootings and announced this morning that he would be personally paying for all the funerals of the Santa Fe shooting victims.
It’s the latest act of philanthropy from the three-time Defensive Player of the Year, who raised a stunning $37 million dollars for Hurricane Harvey relief efforts last year.
As he recovers from a brutal broken bone suffered during week 5 of last year’s NFL season, it’s wonderful to see him putting his free time to good use. Watt is truly dedicated to his community, and it is a huge help for the families of the victims to not have to worry about the sadly substantial financial burden and focusing on remembering their lost loved ones.
