Trump just took a cheap shot at Obama during the National Prayer Breakfast

Trump just took a cheap shot at Obama during the National Prayer Breakfast

In a nauseating show of faux piety, President Donald Trump once again attended the National Prayer Breakfast today to pander to the hypocritical evangelicals who vaulted his sexually predatory personage into power.

This same bloc has remained noticeably quiet even as accusations of extramarital affairs pile atop the president, including the most prominent string of allegations levelled by adult film star Stormy Daniels, who was paid $130,000 by Trump’s attorney Michael Cohen to remain silent about the sexual liaison.

Trump is clearly the furthest thing from a paragon of “Christian morality” and his comments today praising the power of prayer came across as disingenuous at best, cynical and exploitative at worst. His speech also gave him the chance to engage in one of his most pathetic hobbies: attacking his predecessor.

Trump took a less-than-veiled swipe at Obama by claiming that he has reclaimed the phrases “One nation under God” and “Merry Christmas” for the American people, implying that our first black president tried to remove them from the national consciousness.

Trump asserted that there is a “big difference between now and two or three years ago” and that things were “going in the other direction rapidly,” perhaps implying that President Obama was steering the country towards godlessness if not outright Satanism.

It’s hardly surprising that Trump would engage in this kind of talk, given that he shamelessly accused President Obama of being a secret Muslim, a claim offensive for both its mendacity and its bigoted implication that there something inherently wrong with practicing Islam.

“One nation under God. So important. And we say it. A lot of people, you know, they don’t say it. But you know what? They’re starting to say it more, just like we’re starting to say ‘Merry Christmas’ when that day comes around. You notice a big difference between now and two or three years ago? It was, Paula, it was going in the other direction rapidly. Now? It’s straight up,” Trump said.

The kind of profligate immorality displayed not only in Trump’s long, sordid track record but in his daily behavior and rhetoric would have his Christian voters incensed if he were a Democratic president. Since he’s a Republican, they choose to continually overlook his worst actions. He should be ashamed but, more importantly, so should they.
