This tweet from CNN’s chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta says everything you need to know about President Trump, his relationship with the press, and his culpability for the environment that resulted in the fatal shooting of five people at the Capital Gazette newspaper in Annapolis, Maryland yesterday.
I tried to ask the president if he would stop calling us the enemy of the people. He did not respond.

Jim Acosta was among the reporters covering Trump as he made his first comments in-person about the shooting while speaking at an event celebrating the six-month mark of the passage of the Republican tax bill that gave a windfall to the ultra-wealthy and to corporations while leaving crumbs and a call for massive cuts in social services to everyone else.
Trump relied on obviously insincere platitudes in his remarks on the shooting.
“This attack shocked the conscience of our nation and filled our hearts with grief,” Trump said. “Journalists, like all Americans, should be free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their job.”
He continued by claiming that his administration “will not rest until we have done everything in our power to reduce violent crime and to protect innocent life.”
It sounds exactly like something a normal president would say, but a normal president wouldn’t have spent the entirety of his administration describing the press as the “enemy of the people” in the same terms that fascist dictators have traditionally used during their ascendancy.
Trump’s popularizing of the term “fake news” as a political tool to distract attention from reports of his administration’s multiple misdeeds and failures — and to deny the accuracy of deeply researched and reported stories that include actual facts rather than the alternative variety that he likes to maliciously spread — has led to Acosta and other reporters being harassed by deluded and angry Trump supporters.
It was that kind of experience that motivated Acosta to shout his personally significant question at Trump where it fell on the deaf ears of a studiously arrogant, deceptive, and spiteful president. Trump’s refusal to answer Acosta’s particularly relevant question was an answer in itself that made it obvious that Trump won’t be ceasing his attacks on media any time soon.
You can watch Acosta fruitlessly try to get an answer from the hypocritical president in the tweeted video clip below.
