Is Melania Trump the one member of the Trump family with a conscience? Or is the statement that her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, gave to CNN just another move in the Trump administration’s attempt to address the surge of outrage over the policy of the separation of refugee children from their parents at the border?
Grisham issued a highly unusual statement this morning from the First Lady who rarely speaks out on issues involving her husband’s political agenda.
“Mrs. Trump hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform,” the communications director said. “She believes we need to be a country that follows all laws, but also a country that governs with heart.”
Assuming that the statement actually represents Melania Trump’s views and isn’t just the work of the White House damage control team, her statement represents the first sign of a softening of the tone coming from the Trump administration regarding the policy implemented by her husband of seizing refugee children from their families as they cross the US border seeking asylum.
Until now, the administration has either quoted out-of-context bible verses to defend their heinous actions or, in the case of the president himself, simply straight-out lied and blamed the policy on the Democrats whom he conveniently forgot aren’t actually running the government and had nothing to do with the “zero tolerance” policy implemented by Trump’s Justice Department in April of this year.
With almost 2,000 children separated from their families and placed into holding facilities between April 19 and May 31, according to the Department of Homeland Security, it would be a huge cognitive dissonance to absorb any other reaction from a first lady who has made assisting children the focus of the signature “Be Best” program that she cribbed from the Obama administration.
Hopefully, the statement from Melania Trump is a sign that the president is beginning to realize that he is fighting a battle that he will not win and is seeking a face-saving way out of the hole he’s dug himself into.
Other signs of the administration’s attempts to slowly inch away from the policy come from comments made by White House advisor Kellyanne Conway who said today on NBC’s Meet The Press:
“As a mother, as a Catholic, as somebody who’s got a conscience … I will tell you that nobody likes this policy,” Conway said. “Congress passed the law that it is a crime to enter this country illegally,” she added. “So if they don’t like that law, they should change it.”
Well, guess which party has a majority in both houses of Congress right now? If you really want to express your outrage at this policy already declared a human rights violation by the UN, you know what to do in November in the midterms. VOTE THE REPUBLICANS BEHIND THIS EVIL OUT OF OFFICE!
