President Trump’s cozy relationship with Vladimir Putin was put on full display this morning when the Russian President invited his American counterpart to come visit him in Moscow after snubbing Trump’s own invitation earlier this week.
At the BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, and China) summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, the Russian president announced that he is open to meeting with Trump again and revealed he has already invited him to Moscow: “We are ready for such meetings, we are ready to invite President Trump to Moscow. He has this invitation already and I told him about it,” said Putin.
Putin went on to praise Trump, saying that his “great virtue is that he always wants to keep his promises to his voters. You can critique him for what he does and many people do that but one thing is clear — he is willing to fulfill his campaign promises.”
Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders responded by saying that the President is “open to visiting Moscow upon receiving a formal invitation” and that he “looks forward to having President Putin to Washington after the first of the year, and he is open to visiting Moscow upon receiving a formal invitation.”
While diplomacy and a healthy relationship between two nuclear-armed global powers is certainly a good thing, it is extremely suspicious that Donald Trump is pursuing a second meeting with President Putin with such uncharacteristic vigor.
Trump has not put as much effort into any one political issue his entire presidency, save perhaps for attempting to discredit Special Counsel Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s meddling in the 2016 elections. He certainly hasn’t pursued meetings with our actual allies with as much energy as he does with Putin.
Coming on the heels of the news that Russian hackers are already beginning to target Democratic politicians in order to interfere in the 2018 midterm elections and in the context of Trump’s Russia Apology Tour last week, it’s impossible to view these invitations with anything but suspicion.
It’s no surprise that Putin would rather Trump go visit him in Moscow, as it’s much easier to electronically surveil him there. However, with any luck, Mueller’s investigation will put an end to this treasonous nonsense long before we have to deal with that possibility.
