This morning, the Republican Party showed their true colors with a stunning series of four moves in Congress to protect Trump and the Russian Federation from the consequences of their illegal meddling in the 2016 election – and to leave our nation vulnerable to electronic warfare during the upcoming midterms.
First, House Intelligence Committee Chairman and infamous Trump lapdog Devin Nunes (R-CA) rejected a motion by Rep. Adam Schiff demanding that the committee subpoena the interpreter who translated the closed-door discussion between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin’s now infamous Monday summit in Helsinki, Finland.
Directly after that discussion, Trump publicly refused twice to challenge or criticize Putin or even accept the reality that Russia conducted an elaborate hacking and social media disinformation campaign against the Democratic Party during the election – and then embarked on a Putin apology campaign that he still hasn’t backed off from.
Given the effort that the President is putting into defending his relationship with Putin and putting Russia’s interests above our own, the American people deserve to know what was said behind those closed doors – but Trump’s bootlickers are making sure that won’t happen.
The House wasn’t finished there, however. House Republicans refused to increase funding for election security, arguing that they’d already spent enough and that the move was nothing but a“shrewd political shenanigan that has no merit to it,” despite the warnings from the intelligence community, Robert Mueller’s probe, and Trump’s own Director of Homeland Security that the Russians are gearing up to run a similar electoral interference campaign on behalf of the Republican Party this November.
In the Senate, the number two Republican, John Cornyn of Texas, blocked a resolution that would have publicly enshrined the Senate’s support for the conclusions of our intelligence community that the Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election on behalf of Donald Trump.
“It is purely a symbolic act and what we need to do is … do the hard work that senators have to do through the regular order,” complained Cornyn.
Symbolic it might be, the decision to block it speaks much louder than the bill itself, which simply is a confirmation of universally acknowledged truths supported by not just our intelligence community but by those in allied nations.
Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) refused to be left out of the spotlight and blocked a resolution by Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) that similarly called for the Senate to support the conclusions of the intelligence community about Russian hacking in the 2016 election.
“The Congress must make it clear that we accept the assessment of our intelligence community with regard to Russian election interfering in our country and in other democracies” declared Sanders – but that wasn’t good enough for Paul, who accused him of “Trump derangement” syndrome.
For the leadership of the Republican Party to publicly refuse TWICE to back our intelligence communities makes it clear that all their militant “patriotism” and fetishistic worship of our nation’s bloated law enforcement, military and intelligence community blob is nothing but a cheap political billyclub to beat voters and their rivals about the head with.
They never cared for this country or for any of the people, and anyone who still believes in the principled Republican is an utter fool.
They have made it clear that they are a party of vile traitors who wear vicious nationalism on their chests to hide the empty blackness underneath, too obsessed with advancing their extremist white supremacist ideology and maintaining an iron grip on power to care about norms or the ideals of the American republic, which they are actively pushing to destroy and replace with some kind of dystopian theocratic-libertarian dictatorship.
Their billionaire puppetmasters will stop at nothing to push forward their plutocratic agenda by rolling back every worker’s protection ever enacted, gutting the social safety net, and packing the courts with their hand-picked extremists to make sure that progressives can’t ever reverse the damage they’re going to do our institutions and to the well-being of the American people – and the Republican Party will stop at nothing to make sure they succeed.
