A Republican leader just quit his party and shredded Trump in a blistering op-ed

A Republican leader just quit his party and shredded Trump in a blistering op-ed

As the reign of Donald Trump drives the Republican Party deeper and deeper into the abyss of open blood-and-soil fascism, more and more of its members are calling it quits, frustrated and disgusted with what their party has become.

Michael J. London is the latest GOP member to publicly call it quits, penning a scathing op-ed in the Hartford Courant explaining to the people of Trumbull, Connecticut, why their former Republican Party town committee member and former town council member has thrown in the towel and registered as an unaffiliated voter.

The answer comes as little surprise.

“I blame President Trump for turning the Grand Old Party into a lame, extreme right-wing group of people unwilling or unable to see the truth. But Trump is not alone in causing my disillusionment. I have had it with the state and federal branches of the Republican Party that tolerated the president’s behavior. None of our GOP candidates for governor denounced Trump. None of the leaders of Connecticut’s GOP will speak out.

Trump is simply the worst president our country has had — ever. He is encouraging increased pollution and disavowing the need to halt climate change. He is taking credit for a strong economy when it was the previous president (like him or not) who set the current strong economy in motion. He has separated immigrant mothers and children. He has, more likely than not, supported (or participated in) collusion with an enemy.”

London listed off a litany of Trump’s many sins that doesn’t even begin to touch the enormous scope of the President’s misdeeds, focusing on his misogyny, his cruelty towards immigrants, the damage he’s doing to our international standing in the world, his attacks on the media, and even admits how his tax cuts only aide the wealthiest Americans.  “My search for redeeming qualities falls woefully short” he mourns.

He knows that this won’t earn him any friends, but knows it’s the right thing to do.

“Disavowing my party is no easy thing. I have made many friends over the years in the Republican Party. I am saddened by the fact that many will be more than offended by what I am saying. My decision was made after considerable soul-searching.

But I can’t take it any more. Trump does not represent true Republican values. He does not represent my values. I am leaving the Republican Party and, for the time being, will remain unaffiliated.”

It’s been stunning to see how easily the rank-and-file of the Republican Party have fallen in line with Trump’s racist and destructive agenda, which makes denunciations like London’s all the more powerful. Kudos to him for finally having the courage to stand up and set an example for the rest of his former party.
